Vadstena - Home of St Birgitta/Brigid

Actually that isn't quite true. She was born just across the lake where I live. But this is the town where her daughter founded the Brigid orden upon her death in Rome in 1373.

The Brigid orden was quite unusual  - there were monks and nuns,  living totally separated, but lead by a Mother Superior.

Of course the monastery  and nunnery were dismantled  by the king in the lake 16th century  but the fantastic church is still there (now of course Lutheran) and the nuns' dormitory is an interesting museum.

We  tried to get a spot for the night down in the harbour last night,  but no such luck. Instead we are parked  beside an old church turned Tourist Info. For free, and smack in the middle of this medieval town, but the church bells toll twice every hour...

The town is incredibly charming. As usual we've checked real estate agents, and prices in the town center are quite steep...

Tomorrow we follow the lake (Vättern) north to the town of Askersund.

The first photos are of the Vadstena Castle. Then church and nunnery/museum. And last some photos from the town itself.
